ABOUT

A tale entitled You

‘Ello! I am Generich Herrera Capuli, a Filipino Astronomer.

I grew up in Marilao, Bulacan, Philippines, a three-quarters of an hour away from the Capital – Metro Manila. Our hometown is famous from its sweet delicacies making me a sweet tooth in a lot of ways.

Like many others, I love to study (Literally bookish) although I tend to slack off yet getting back my stride quickly after that. Aside from studying and doing research, I’m fond of watching K-Dramas and animes, a ton of them every season. It’s my stress reliever after a tiring day…And eating as well especially if it is ‘Pares’ and ‘Mami’.

Gaming? Yes, definitely! Both console and PC. Sporty? Not so much. Though, I play basketball and some cycling during the weekends. And lastly, I love to travel...Not to the moon but to other places. I’ve been gone off to Japan before…More to come.

Switching to my astronomical self, since my HS days, I’m hooked up to observing the clear night sky. Although, not as great as my peers, I’m giving it a shot on my room to improve. I would also love to conduct some science communication stuff and digital media. Connecting to the youth for them to love the realm of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) related especially Astronomy. Projects like that are something I will cherish.

Senior High: Soar high, feet down!

I started and graduated my Senior High School at Jesus Is Lord Colleges Foundation, Inc. in Bocaue, Bulacan, Philippines…About a half-hour travel from ours. And yes, I’m a proud JILian and their very first student who took an astronomy course among many. I was taught to be competent at my STEM realm, mostly engaging in research things, while at the same time fueling my passion for astronomy and honing me to become competitive and character-driven leader which is their cornerstone. At this point, I’m able to join in few seminars and events related to Astronomy by Philippine Astronomical Society and UPLB (University of Philippines Los Baños) Astronomical Society.

College

I am an astronomy sophomore at the Rizal Technological University – Mandaluyong Campus, about to major, either Meteorological Science or Astrophysics. Academically, I’m interested for Stellar Astrophysics – Variable Stars. And of course Meteorology, the pesky weather phenomena and processes using open access EOs – Earth Observations, Satellite Imagery, Ensembles and so on. Particularly on Meteorology, I'm now focusing on severe weather meteorology in the Philippines.

Narrowing things down, I’m entailed in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Symbolic Computational Research Laboratory under Professor Willie Anthony D. Sapalaran.  With his guidance, I’m dabbling around α Orionis – a Type C semiregular/SRc variable star – widely known as Betelgeuse in the Constellation of Orion. Ergo, it will allow us to answer and rectify current literature about the following key points;

  1. Periodicity (Primary and Long Secondary Period)

  2. Bolometric Luminosity L

I've also recently shared my undergraduate thesis about the case study of 14 August 2016 Manila Tornado First case study in the Philippines tackling severe weather meteorology. We produced tons of Skew-T Hodographs, Meteorological/Spatial Maps, including a thorough case description of the event, in this project for the pursuit of understanding the aforementioned severe weather event in terms;

  1. Synoptic Pattern

  2. Mesoscale Pattern

  3. Dynamical Pattern

Learn more on what I do about this project on my                 section.

Recently, I’ve joined on a mini-project of our Astronomy Department known as AstroCHATS. I’ve tackled about basic yet concise information about the history and types of Galaxies in our universe during the time of pandemic. Make sure to check it out here.
